Types of Variable Frequency Drives

You Must be wondering how many types of VFDs are available n Industrial Market.

If you classify them , so based on supply Voltage type AC drives and DC drives.

We will Talk about AC drives. AC Drives ( where out put of Drive is AC and connected to AC machine Induction or synchronous)

AC Drive We can further divide in two :

1. CSI : Current Source Inverter : where Reactor is in between Rectifier and inverter and giving DC current source to inverter

2. VSI : Voltage Source Inverter: Where Capacitor is in between Rectifier and inverter and giving DC Voltage source to inverter

VSI further can be classified with two categories bases on Rectifier and Inverter Type.

Rectifier : There are mainly two kind of rectifiers are available .

1. Controlled Rectifiers -- Active Rectifier ( Having IGBT, IGCT or Thyristor) as switching Device.

2. Uncontrolled Rectifiers-- Diode Rectifiers ( Diodes as switching device. This type can come with various options like , 6 Pulse , 12 Pulse, 24, pulse ,36 Pulse configuration.

Inverter Types :

1. Two level Inverter

1. Multilevel Inverter

a. 3 level inverter ( Neutral Point clamped)

b. 5 level Inverter ( H Bridge and ANPC)

3. Multi cell Inverter
